Edit Speech Outline

Refer to this checklist as you go along the process of approving an outline. Before you approve the assignment, make sure the writer meets each of the following requirements:

  • Outline’s title meets the following guidelines:
    • First letter of each word is capitalized
    • Title is indicative of the specific topic he/she is writing about
    • Title is not general (i.e. if he/she is writing about a rape case, make sure the writer has included the victim’s name or something unique about the case so it cannot be mistaken for any other rape incident)
  • Thesis: A couple of sentences about the topic and the writer’s position are included
    • The rest of the speech should be supporting this statement through the sub-topics
  • Under each sub-topic there are three to four bullets about what the writer will discuss in the paragraph
    • These all should support the thesis and work as evidence
  • Make sure students include potential solutions or what they would like to see done in their last sub-topic or at some point in the speech

You need to do the following on this page:

  • Add comments in the “Comment Box” for the writer to read as they update their outline or begin to work on their speech. Tell them what they need to edit in order to get their outline approved.
  • Select the “Status” of “Ready to Give Speech” only if the above requirements are met. If they are not, you should select “Writer Needs to Edit Again,” and include which requirements they did not meet in the comment box. If you do not approve the outline, be sure to click "no" for the question “I have made the necessary changes.”
