The United Nations International Day of Peace is a "day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace" that is observed around the world on September 21st each year. This year's theme was "The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70," celebrating the 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document adopted in December 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris "as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations."
Boston celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 23rd this year in the Boston Commons. The program included music, dance, song, poetry, artwork, and peace education, as well as face-painting for kids, and a walk to the Garden of Peace. The program also included a lineup of speakers and activists; including longtime Quaker John Bach, activist group The Boston Minstrels, Cherokee activist Dawn Duncan, dancer and teacher Kaeza Fearn, International Day of Peace co-chair Ian Harrington, classical musician Miranda Henne, reggae performer and racial activist Toussaint Liberator, mbira player and Shona culture evangelist Solomon Murungu, Chilean historian Maria Soledad Del Villar, indigenous Human rights expert Chief Wompimeequin Wampatuck, and Reverends Rodney E. Dailey, Wayne S. Daley, Darrell R. Hamilton II, Marla Marcum, and Rodney Petersen.
